BIO
Taiwanese-American Artist Teddy Tsai utilizes a variety of mediums to engage with practices of repetition and ritual. His work is known for its meticulous and often labor-intensive processes, focusing on the method over the means.
With an early start in public art projects, such as Redmond's roundabout sculpture, The Constant Face of a Temporary Existence (2014), Teddy has continued to develop context specific community work. Involvement in prison exchange programs and Native American history reclamation projects have helped inform his social practice as he incorporates his own history as an Asian-American into his work. An active member of his community, Teddy fosters an excitement for working with others, organizing events like UO Zine Fest (2017), an annual tabling event at the University of Oregon hosting local artists.
Drawing Inspiration from the endurance-based practice of Tehching Hsieh, his thesis piece Work in Progress (2018) showcases the labor involved in everyday rituals, engaging with the concept of work as art. At the core of his thesis is a conflict of opposing ideologies: the objective efficiency of production and the romanticization of an illogical devotion to unsustainable processes.
A graduate of the Robert D. Clark Honors College, Teddy exhibited his thesis in the Laverne Krause gallery, where he has participated in collaborative and juried exhibitions. Other exhibitions include a solo exhibition in the Washburn Gallery and a group exhibition in the Athens Centre (Athens, Greece 2016). Born in Wilmington, Delaware, Teddy obtained his BA in Art from the College of Design, University of Oregon.
